Monasteries (Called as Gompa) are actually the main historical heritage in Ladakh. They boast of a rich collection of Buddhist relics like thankas, murals, sculptures, scriptures, etc. Typically, the monasteries in Ladakh have been located at isolated areas, away from the hustle bustle of the routine life. This lends an air of peace and tranquility to them.
Some of them unfortunately are not in such a good shape now due to harsh weather condition. All sincere efforts are made by the institutions running these monasteries to retain the historical importance of these structures. Some of the prominent Monasteries in Ladakh are :-
